Bionic Hits it Hard
Bionic (Omar Torres) from CrossFit Hardcore in Boca Raton, FL finished 11th overall in this year's Games. He's been training hard, and just set a big PR in Fran at 2:08 (28 seconds off his previous PR). His buddy happened to film it with his phone, so we get to watch a tiny Bionic getting some.
We've all seen so many Fran vids, why another? Because they're fun, that's why. And this may be the most legit sub 2:10 Fran vid I've seen. No ball and full ROM.

VERY VERY LEGIT!
Bionic was getting so high on the pull-ups, it looked almost like he was doing C2B.
WTG Bionic! Agreed that this is best Fran video posted for a long time. Head was definately above the bar on EVERY rep. Not C2B on all the reps, but the majority were.
This is the kind of standards that we ALL must be aiming for. Anything less cannot be called 'a record' or 'legit', but rather a good try.
Again, hats off to you man that was great!
Nice job Omar. I have to agree, bud. First legit sub 2:10 Fran I've seen. This proves that form sacrificed during intensity to the degree that I saw, was just an excuse for complacency. Full ROM, ROM, ROM.
All my respect partner, nice!
Holycrap! Wicked performance Bio'! Lookout games can't wait to see Bionic kickbutt this year!
FINALLY! That was awesome and left no doubts, the goal of every workout. I hate the damn ball! Full squats, full presses, legit pulls! Nice work man. Inspiring.
i was at the gym when he did this...watching it was unreal, and like the video shows, all legit...
I was there when Bionic did it and I do have to say it was incredible , his form was on point on the thrusters, the pullups were so high that he could almost toucht the bar with his chest!!!!
The sick part of all this is that he didn't even feel like doing it!!!!
I can't even immagine when you 're going to be in top shape Bionic!!
Definitely the most legit fran to date close to the 2 minute mark. Amazing performance.
Thanks guys/gals. CrossFit ROCKS!!!!
Wow, finally a Fran with no ball and frickin' great quality form overall. My only beef (yup, I gotta play the jerk again) are those 'hand savers' that he's wearing. I'm a purist, I'm sorry, and my feelings are that those things help you hang on the pull-up bar longer.
Yes, I'm playing the hater, but I gotta call it as I see it. Other than that, a legit hardcore performance by a legit CrossFitter, no doubts there.
My time completely sucks at FRAN but I have to comment on the savers, pullups, I don't have to break up pullups on Fran and I suck at it. Its only 21-15-9. I don't see the big deal with the savers, Maybe on an Angie or the one PU per minute but I think G. that may be getting a bit picky. Take those away the savers, what then 2:10.
Badass performance Bionic!!! Way to keep it legit!
I'll hopefully be sub 2:10 one of these days.
I wa thinking the other day that the record frans should have be without a ball and obvious chin over the bar without excessive reaching with the chin. Not that they are not all impressive, but so many times so close together and using a ball that assists on the thruster at times can make the difference of a second or two overall.
Ok all you fast time Fran guys. Everyone redo your fran without the ball and make sure your chin is over the bar without reaching.
I challenge you all to it. Of course who am I to challenge everyone faster than me? I am sticking with the ball. ;)
Why do people make comments about hand grips not being legit? Olympic gymnast wear them! Serious athletes use them to avoid rips so they can train harder and more often. Totally legit.
James - not all Olympic gymnasts wear them. And actually the best female gymnasts on the bars don't where grips. Males gymnasts have to wear them so that they don't slip off the rings or high bar as they swing since the diameter of the bar/ring is so small. Also, Olympic gymnasts wear grips because they are releasing the bar, doing multiple flips and then regrasping the bar. The dowel on the grip allows them to catch and hold onto the bar. NO olympic gymnast would wear grips for pullups or their conditioning.
Common misconception - Grips don't prevent rips!!!! They only help you hang onto the bar after a release move or giants when gravity is ripping you from the bar.
But what do I know... I only coach National Gymnasts.
I'm with Aucoin on this one.
My say on the "handsavers" is..."why do pullups with the concern in your head of getting ripped and slowing your WOD down while you are performing, when you can be asured that you are not going to get rips and can concentrate on your overall performance".
Guys/gals if anything, i can do more or faster pullups without the "savers". They actually make it harder on your forearms because they are 1/4 in. thick making the bar close to 1/2 thicker than what it really is. Of course they are neoprene and they form to your hand, but never the less try using them to see how many consecutive pu's you get without dropping with and without the savers that i use and i can guarantee you, you probably won't get more with them on because your forearms will get fatigued!!!
Don't hate me cause my hands are 100% ready to go everyday! Sorry!
The neoprene is only for the skin. It doesn't give any aid in grip and it actually slides on the bar more than his skin would. This is why it is more difficult to hold the bar with the "savers" on. They are not like the gymnast leather straps in any way other than they are between him and the bar. I consider it legit.
Next someone will do near perfect form, no ball, chest to bar, no grips and then we will be hearing complaints of:
"He used chalk, I don't count it as legit."
Seriously people, how about we just congratulate someone on an AWESOME performance without always having a need to nit pick every friggen detail.
Bionic: Lose the nipple rings bro! They are slowing you down. Nice work!
Like I said before, wicked ROM, wicked video.
You probably do, but try to do you pullups without those savers to build up your calluses and toughness of your hands. I don't wear grips/hand savers/tape... bare hands everyday and have not ripped or had sore hands since Oct 2007. I'll be more beneficial in the long run.
Side note... I think alot of people these days are resorting to a 'quick fix' to make them faster in the short term and forgetting about the long term. Rips form because there is a problem with your technique on the pullup... that's the effect. It is your responsibility to correct the cause, don't just mask the problem.
Omar I don't hate you because your hands are in good shape, I hate you because you kicked my ass in Aromas!!
Just kidding, if those things actually DON'T improve your grip then I'll soften my stance but rips are part of life and gloves/hand savers are just a little too fruity for me.
Todd, chill; the performance is amazing but I'm just a purist to a fault PLUS I thought those things helped him hold onto the bar because it assisted his grip. Turns out he just wants to be a hand model once his CF career comes to an end. In like 30-40 years.
Nice job Omar! Save the hands for Aromas... and I think you are right, the grips protect but actually make it a bit harder to keep going. Hello to everybody at Hardcore! (you too Todd). Lance, is that your phone video? Come on Bro!
Bottom Line:
I haven't used chalk since March. My hands no longer rip, and haven't for 6 months. Hands are ready to go every day.
CHALK, GRIPS ETC. ARE BENEFICIAL, NOT PURE. IF THEY ARE NOT, THEN WHY USE THEM? PERIOD.
Did anyone else notice that, unlike most people, Bionic would start with an almost traditional kip and then get into the butterfly groove? Interesting. Most people start with a butterfly and revert to traditional as they fatigue. This strategy may make a lot of sense since, in my totally unscientific observations, it seems like a lot of butterfly kippers have a faster cycle time, but take a second or two longer to get started when they jump on the bar. Or am I the only one who thinks that?
At any rate, great performance. I'm not one of the form nazi's but it sure is impressive how far over the bar he was getting.
Thanks Mike. Whats up brother? Can you believe all this drama over some friggin hand savers. LMAO!!!!!!!!
LOL, by the way Mike that was my phone, lol. I wasn't planning on gettng such a huge PR. I had just got off shift from the FD and the gym is on my way home. Didn't feel like driving home to get my camera. Now i know to never leave home without it!!! Lessons learned.
You're a firefighter as well?
Gaucoin, yes i am. Thats the other reason i don't like rips. Im a firefighter/paramedic and the last thing i want is to have open sores when dealing with sick patients.
i thought Rabdho's 2:08 fran was pretty legit as well -
http://vimeo.com/2037724
his pullups are all really good, but the butt ball is still there, but the hip still falls below the knee
Well you see that's an environment that it's okay to wear gloves!
actually speaking of hand-protectors,where can I get them?
sometimes my palms or wrist get torn, and it makes it really hard to workout. it would be nice to get some instead of having to tape my hands like mad
Dan go to newgrip.com and call them. tell them i sent you...
Omar....you are always impressive! As Todd and others mentioned....Come on! Even if the majority of us short some of the reps on either the Thrusters and/or Pull-ups we still would not get close to 2:08. Give credit when it is deserved.
I would like to see somebody try fran with grease on the barbell and grease on the pull-up bar to increase the difficulty.
I tried those neoprene grips and didn't think much of them. This is also because they wear out to the point that they no longer help since they wear down.
When I kip on my bar at home that's taped, I rarely rip. However, kipping at many CF affiliate's bars are wider and smoother than my power tower and typically cause my callouses to peel off.
Kipping on fatter bars is typically nicer on the hands but I prefer something more along the width of a men's high bar that is narrow.
I've yet to try kipping pullups with high bar grips. Might be interesting.
Many elite gymnasts don't wear grips simply because they don't have access to them in their programs or they wear a gauze and tape grip combo.
I am still waiting for the 1st pullup???
What the hell where those circle twirls he was doing!!!
I'd have to say the fastest possible time for this routine with REAL pull ups is about 4 minutes.
Power output from CFers is insane.
Bionic takes it to the next level with full ROM!
Bionic + legit ROM = 2009 CF Champion
