What are the CrossFit Games?

“In implementation, this looks like sport. This is revolutionary. It's as distinctive of the program as are the movements and the charter of functionality and variance. Our workouts are competitive events.

The strength and value of CrossFit lies entirely within our dominance of other athletes. This is a truth divined through competition, not debate.”

Greg Glassman, CrossFit Co-Founder & CEO

Oakland Prepares for 09 - Part 1

CrossFit Oakland took the 08 Affiliate Cup with a dominant performance. What are they up to now, you ask? We sent Sevan and Carey to find out. They caught up with them on Saturday, Dec 20th, 2008 in the middle of an internal team competition. The workout was three teams of three athletes competing in a Linda-type workout. They're looking damn strong, too!

The Affiliate competition in 09 will be team workouts. What that means at this point is anyone's guess. We do know the majority of the competition will take place on the Friday before the individual competition, with only the top five teams going on to the Finals on Sunday morning.

Got anything to rival Oakland? Let us know. We'd love to post it here. Contact Tony for information about sending in video and photos.

On August 2nd, 2008 goCrossFit in Nashville, TN put on a Challenge. It was three workouts, two that were known, and one that was a surprise.

The first was 50 pull-ups for time.

The second was 5 rounds for time of:
15 Deadlifts
12 Hang power cleans
9 Front squats
6 Push jerks

The third WOD ended up being overhead farmer's walks sandwiching a run. Ouch!

Another C2 Challenge

GamesWomensHopper3_th.jpgEnlarge image

The Concept2 Indoor Rower is ideal for challenges of all kinds. In last year's Games, a 1K row launched the hopper WOD. This year, Concept2 gave away an indoor rower to the top male and top female 1K row times. They've also invited all affiliates to participate in their Fall Rowing Challenge.

Greg Hammond from C2 sent over this link to a BBC Sports video. In it, Andy Hodge rows 100m in 15.5sec. If there's any distance that CrossFitters might take an elite rower, this is probably it. Anyone got sub 15sec?

Check out C2's article in the CrossFit Journal on how to take advantage of the power of the Performance Monitor.

A report from the wilds of Austin, TX! Thanks to Nicole Holstrom from CrossFit Central for the update.

The CrossFit Central Team just left today for Cali!! We're so excited for the Games!!!

The Fittest Games Challenge was developed to seek out top CrossFitters from the Southern region and send them to compete at the CrossFit Games.

Once a month a challenge was held in different locations across Texas including Breakaway Speed and the Dynamax facility.

The 4 Challenges:
Bench Mark Workout,
CrossFit Total,
a MetCon Challenge, and
the 5K Off Road with an unknown challenge.

To win the Grand Prize - Round Trip Airfare, Hotel Accomadation, and Entrance to the CrossFit Games - the athlete had to compete at the Elite level and complete all four challenges. Affiliates from across Texas sent their clients out to the challenges to represent them and join in the competition for a chance to compete at the CrossFit Games this July.

Texas affiliates, kettlebells, hill runs, deadlifts, pull ups, squats, med ball work, and Mark Rippetoe ensured these challenges were consistently intense! By the final challenge the Grand Prize competitors were within points of each other - This year Lisa Bender of Austin , TX Kris Kepler of Austin, TX, and Ken Kutrer of Ft. Worth, TX are heading to the Games and representing as Elite athletes from Texas!
