What are the CrossFit Games?

“In implementation, this looks like sport. This is revolutionary. It's as distinctive of the program as are the movements and the charter of functionality and variance. Our workouts are competitive events.

The strength and value of CrossFit lies entirely within our dominance of other athletes. This is a truth divined through competition, not debate.”

Greg Glassman, CrossFit Co-Founder & CEO
3, 2, 1 — GO!

The Games are over and the results are in!

The Top Female CrossFitter for 2008 is Caity Matter of Gahanna, OH, where she trains with Rogue Fitness. Tanya Wagner took second place and Gillian Mounsey took third.

The Top Male CrossFitter for 2008 is Jason Khalipa of CrossFit Unlimited in Milpitas, CA. Josh Everett came in second, with Jeremy Thiel in third.

And Speal takes the lead! I bow down to you Speal.

By Alfie on July 5, 2008 4:39 PM

Speal is a machine!

Damn I wish I was at the games!!

By Shannon on July 5, 2008 4:43 PM

I think Speal is built of machine parts

By Josh on July 5, 2008 4:43 PM

I think Speal is built of machine parts

By Josh on July 5, 2008 4:43 PM

Thank you so much for the quick updates! I find it interesting that for the men the leaders have yet to do the run, but for the women, the leaders have all finished the run. Speaks well for Gillian Mousney's chances I think.

By conorb on July 5, 2008 4:44 PM

Josh Everett should definitely move up after the 3rd round.

By Alfie on July 5, 2008 4:46 PM

I am surprised. I thought some of the larger competetors would have the edge with the 285# deadlift. That is twice Speals body weight! I am very impressed - I wish I was there.

By K9thatbites on July 5, 2008 4:48 PM

Agreed Alfie, of the top men he's in the best spot to shoot ahead here due to the order of his events. Assuming he's got enough left in the tank.

By conorb on July 5, 2008 4:55 PM

Sunday's workout should also be a relatively short time-domain type of WOD or else the lead that the athletes spent building up today will all be for not. Speals' blowing away the competition times (by half a minute!) on the 'strict' Fran should put him over the top. What a freak.

On an unrelated note, I wonder what would happen if the CF "crew" (ie. Nicole, Annie, Eva, Brendan, Greg A, etc were competing)...

By LF on July 5, 2008 4:55 PM

Speal is the man....

By Rookie on July 5, 2008 4:58 PM

Brendan at least is competing. He's 34th at the moment I think.

By conorb on July 5, 2008 5:00 PM

Speal= Unreal!, plus dom't forget the guy runs like a gazelle. Luckily next year I should be close to the games!

By Adam/TempleOwl on July 5, 2008 5:10 PM

let's go Queen (adriana), heinz (lance), and (bionic) omar!
run like cheetahs!

By pnut on July 5, 2008 5:10 PM

I'd agree that Josh Everett will probably be moving up. Gillian Mounsey has very good chances, but Jolie Gentry, Linda Leipper, and Tanya Wagner also look good.

Quite a few women have been doing the deadlift workout faster than the run, although there have been a fair amount that haven't. I'd say it's likely that both Jolie and Gillian end up with faster times on the deadlift than the run. In that case, Jolie looks to gain more than Gillian in the third round. Will it be enough to make up almost a minute? I don't know. It will be close.

I think I disagree with LF on the short time-domain WOD for tomorrow. I'd expect to see something longer to get endurance into the mix a little more. The sprint guys have had 3 events to build up a good time benefit from their strengths, now it's time for a long one. Life make sure it's demands are in the 3-5 minute range when it throws things at you.

By MB on July 5, 2008 5:15 PM

Go Speal!

By Shane S on July 5, 2008 5:20 PM

Oops, that should have been "Life doesn't stop to make sure it's demands are in the 3-5 minute range when it throws things at you."

By MB on July 5, 2008 5:22 PM

I think it will still be metcon driven but the longer the time domain, the less and less significant Saturday's results will become. Maybe something to the likes of the Filthy 50 mixed in with a row/run?

By LF on July 5, 2008 5:22 PM

Where is Matt Murski?

By Liam on July 5, 2008 5:24 PM

Towards the top of page 2.

By conorb on July 5, 2008 5:27 PM

Amazing numbers put up by so many of the competitors. Congrats to all of them!
I'm guessing tomorrow includes rowing, double-unders and mucleups.

By Amit on July 5, 2008 5:29 PM

Way to go Ricky, Libby and Joe from Crossfit Omaha!! Keep up the great work. We are all cheering for you!!

And to Ricky: Damian says "Good Job Daddy"!

By Crystal on July 5, 2008 6:11 PM

Either Welbourn is dogging it, or CF is truly hard even for those who are really designed and trained up for athletic endeavors. I never would have expected him to be so far behind after 2 rds!

By James F on July 5, 2008 6:12 PM

Way to represent ROGUE FITNESS of Columbus, Caity, Eric and Jonathan!!!

By Carolyn Thomas on July 5, 2008 6:14 PM

Is anyone posting more pictures somewhere? If you know of a site with more pictures, please share!

By Laurie on July 5, 2008 6:20 PM

Dutch make up some time in the run! You got this!

By Brian CrossfitFlagstaff on July 5, 2008 6:24 PM

DNFT = Did not finish in time?
What does NST, NSD, and NSR mean?

By Shane S on July 5, 2008 6:26 PM

this is AWESOME! just got on and saw the results. man its close! great job everyone! does anyone know what time the sunday event starts? thanks

By ARCFit on July 5, 2008 6:31 PM

James, I'm surprised Welbourn is finding it so tough, but it does make sense.

There's a lot of body to pull-up or lug up a hill in a 300lb lineman. It'll also be a disadvantage in burpees (and so will his height).

Short guys are going to have a big advantage in pullups/thrusters/burpees.

Light guys are going to have an advantage in pullups/rope climbs/thrusters/burpees/hill runs.

Tall guys are going to have an advantage in rowing/rope climbs/box jumps.

By Slowjoe on July 5, 2008 6:32 PM

OH YEAH! CF Park City in the lead! Go Chris! Bring home the CHAMPEEEEEEEEENSHIP!

Good luck Eric, Sarah, Shahan, and the rest of the crew!

Great job CrossFit Omaha!!!! Joe, Ricky and Libby are showing 'em how it's done! Keep up the good work! We can't wait to see how you guys do.

By angela on July 5, 2008 6:54 PM

Speal, you are the man. Way to represent Park City!!!!!

By Rwinegar on July 5, 2008 6:59 PM

Next year - maybe weight classe? similar to boxing? What does DFNT, NST, etc. mean?

By ronnie b. good on July 5, 2008 7:11 PM

Ricky, Joe, and Libby--you inspire all of us at Crossfit Omaha! Good luck tomorrow! You guys are NASTY!

By Paul Audi on July 5, 2008 7:13 PM

Awesome job CrossFit Omaha!! Ricky, Joe, and Libby we knew you guys would blow through the competition. Can't wait to see the final times!

By Courtney on July 5, 2008 7:18 PM

OPT and AFT are still in there with the run left to do. A big test will be who can recover best for tomorrow as it's bound to be a longer session. It appears that the chest to bar has slowed the "thruster/pull up" workout down a little.

By Intent on July 5, 2008 7:31 PM

So do we have anyone who can leak some of the last round's results!?

need....my....fix..... hehe

by the way, speal is simply unreal.

But I also love the fact that we have some unknown/underdogs up there! good show!

By Fredastere on July 5, 2008 7:59 PM

MY GOD! I can't believe those times! 2:33 for the deadlift workout. Are you kidding me, that is crazy. I was at first like, "do you mean 2:33 per round of that workout?" Haha. Insane. Good work everyone. I can't wait to see what tomorrow has in store for you/us.

By JC on July 5, 2008 8:07 PM

Like the "unknown" factor, I'm not surprised by Speal's results after following his consistent times on the WODS. Not surprised about welbourne - It's really not his cup of tea, and is hopefully humbling to him.
Gillian is a beast and I think will have the deadlift wod on Jolie.

If tomorrow's wod is mid-long range it will really be anyones game at the top of the ladder..

No one has given credit to Pat B yet. and I think he's in a very good space right now.

By kam on July 5, 2008 8:21 PM

DNFT = did not finish thrusters, i presume

go scott d!

By john heins on July 5, 2008 8:28 PM

Heard tomorrow is Grace with 155#, hope Speak can hang.

By Wasatch Damon on July 5, 2008 8:44 PM

The anticipation is KILLING ME

By kam on July 5, 2008 8:57 PM

It's time for Josh Everett to shine!

By Fredastere on July 5, 2008 8:57 PM

Speal in 1st with 9:03, Rick F from Omaha in 2nd with 10:03 and Josh E in 3rd with 10:08. Tomorrow is 155# squat cleans and jerks for.

By Laurie on July 5, 2008 9:03 PM

that should say "for 30 reps"

By Laurie on July 5, 2008 9:04 PM

For the women, Gillian in 1st, not sure about second, Jolie in 3rd, don't know times.

By Laurie on July 5, 2008 9:06 PM

I would say speal is screwed and Everett would be the favorite, but Speal is F-ING Speal!

By Adam/ TempleOwl on July 5, 2008 9:12 PM

Looks like results are up - sort of.
Go to round 2 results pdf and type in a 3 over top of the 2 in the file name.

By fdm069 on July 5, 2008 9:12 PM

Nobody's going to catch Josh on tomorrow's workout. I think he's pretty much got top 3 locked in.

And tomorrow may not be Speal's best event, but I don't see him giving up that big of a lead.

By Justin M on July 5, 2008 9:14 PM

Good call fdm069, thanks for sharing. Wow Speal has one minute advantage!

By Adam/ TempleOwl on July 5, 2008 9:17 PM

I wonder how many reps Speal can get out before Rick and Josh get cracking

By Rookie on July 5, 2008 9:22 PM

Keep it up OMAHA...you guys are doing great!!!!!!

By Melissa Beckmann on July 5, 2008 9:25 PM

somewhere in Aromas Matt Murski is lickin' his chops.

Speal + 20lbs.

By LF on July 5, 2008 9:25 PM

spent time on his ollie lifting, and everett is A lifter.

59 seconds is a huge advantage though.

Welbourne may claw his way into the top 100 if he's lucky.

My guess is the top guys will do this in 4-5 minutes. 5 reps at a time.

I cant wait to see the footage of these guys going at it.

By kam on July 5, 2008 9:31 PM

Tomorrow will be crazy... Sets up perfect for Josh Everett to make up time, but will it be too much? Wish I was there, its going to be insane!!!

By Justin "Thor" on July 5, 2008 9:31 PM

Great work Crossfit Omaha!! Keep it up, we are all cheering for you. You make us proud!!!
